Cycling tour in the Balaton Uplands

If you only have one weekend to relax, we will give you a bike tour suggestion for your Saturday, which of course can also be completed by car.

After a rich, delicious breakfast or early horseback riding, you can leave the Matild Country Hotel by bike or car towards Szigliget. If you go by bike, a dirt road leads from Nemesvita to Balatonederics, where you can ride along the main street of the village to the terrace of the Effenpergel Family Winery with beautiful panorama. It is worth having a brake and drinking a cooling spritzer and a cup of honey-sweet grape juice for the little ones. Sitting on the terrace, you can admire the panorama of Lake Balaton, Szigliget and Szent-György Hill. If you have a backpack with you, we recommend buying a bottle of one of owner’s late-harvest wines, but his „pálinka” (Snapsh) can also be a good choice as a gift. Then you can drive on the bike rout towards Szigliget. Perhaps everyone knows Szigliget and the castle, and its beautiful view of the Tapolca and Káli basins. Don’t miss the Szigliget ice cream under the castle. You can taste such special flavors that it is worth waiting in the large queue.

When you finished the ice cream, roll down the “mountain” and head towards Hegymagas and Szent-György-hegy. Here, after a little ride, once the ice cream has settled, you can eat and drink good again. You can eat delicious street food in the Hegymagasi Marhaságok (beef products) located on the market square of Hegymagas, but snacks are also offered in the two wineries we like.

Szászi’s team focuses on a sophisticated gastronomic experience and offers a three-course menu. The Horváth Winery takes you back in time and awaits you with classic dishes. My favorite is Gizzard Stew accompanied by a good glass of „Agnus Niger” red wine.

After you have recharged your energy, stuffed your belly and layd in the sun , I recommend you visit the northern side of SzentGyörgy Hill. There you will find basalt columns and an ice cave even more beautiful than Badacsony. Not far from here is the Dragon hole (also known as Dragon Cave), an interesting geological formation. The approximately 10-metre-deep cavity is covered with stones. In the formed gaps, snow accumulates in winter, which often persists until summer. From the gaps cold air flows out in summer. Thats why folklore calls it an ice cave.
